In the following we will take you deep into the principles of how to gain visibility in the search engine results. You will learn how to submit your sites to the most relevant search engines and search indexes.

We will walk you through how to optimize your sites, so they compete optimal in relation to the search terms your visitors use, when they search information. And you will learn how to find those nice niche search terms, where the competition from other sites are low.

Finally, we will take you behind the principles of gaining popularity by Google, i.e. increasing your page rank.

Submit your web site to the search engines

Before your site will show up in the search results, your site need to found by the search engines and the individual pages needs to be indexed by the search robots. If you do nothing, it can take a year or more before a search robot by chance pays you a visit and in this time your site is invisible to all the millions of net users. Actually a pity after all the time and efforts you have used to make your site shine. It's a little like having arranged a party and forgot to send the invitations.

But which search engines do you have to sign up for, how many and how? In principle, there are hundreds of different search engines and search directories. In practice there are very few that are important. In western world, Google has in recent years developed almost complete dominance with market shares between 800-90% of all web searches. Of the remainder are Yahoo and MSN the majority.

By focusing on these three search engines you thereby hit 95% of all searches on the web.

You can submit on the following links:

Google Search - Free submission

Yahoo Search - Free submission

MSN Live Searc - Free submission

That was easy, right?

Furthermore you should submit your site to DMOZ.org, Open Directory Project. Here we talk about an editorial directory of websites of good quality. Before your site can be placed in this index, it has to be validated by the editors of DMOZ. This is not quite easy and it can take time to get your site into DMOZ, but the reason this is worth the effort, is that it is the direct way to the hearts of the search engines. Especially by Google an admission by DMOZ automatically means faster indexation and higher rankings.

You may also consider signing up for the Yahoo Directory, not to be confused with Yahoo Search, which you have already signed up for on the above link. Yahoo Directory is a directory of sites categorized by topics. It is not free, but it can be considered, if it is important to get started quickly, as all the other search engines assign some value to a page when it is included in this library.

DMOZ.org, Open Directory Project - Free, but not before an editorial approval.

Yahoo Directory - Paid submissions

You must be prepared, that it can take some time, before the search engines get indexed all your pages. You must calculate about 6-8 weeks.

You can follow the development in Googles indexation by writing the following in your browser:

site:YOURDOMAIN.com   (Replace YOURDOMAIN.con with the actual www address)

You can check external links,  linking to your domain with the following link

link:YOURDOMAIN.com

Google Webmaster Tools

You can keep up with Googles indexation if you sign up wit Googles Webmaster Tools. All you need is a gmail account to you sign up. It is all free. After signing up you will have to submit your site and prove, that you are the rightful owner of the site. A small peace of code is generated for you and you will have to implement this code inside the <head> tag of the html code of your index page.

It has to look like this:

<head>

<meta name="verify-v1" content="PLACE GOOGLE CODE HERE" />

</head>

If your not on a friendly foot with html code, you will also have the possibility get generated a validation file, which you then have to upload to the root directory of your site.

Now you have access to a long range of statistics concerning Google activity on your site, like the following showing the Google activity on a site submitted in December. As you can see it took about one month with very small sporadic visits from the robot before the actual indexation started to speed up.

Remember your site map

When you have signed up for  Google Webmaster Tools, it is possible to submit your site map to Google. This ensures, that Google sees all your pages and the general process of indexation is speeded up.

The actual site map is simply a text file, e.g. written in Wordpad or another handy text editor. The consists of a list of the URL's to your pages, simply listed one under another.

eg. written like this:

http://www.yourdomain.com/index.htm

http://www.yourdomain.com/articles/article1.htm

http://www.yourdomain.com/articles/article2.htm

and so on...

The file is saved as sitemap.txt and has to be uploaded to the root of the site

Next step

Now you have submitted your site to the relevant search engines and you have uploaded a site map with all your pages. In addition, you're now fully engaged in monitoring the indexing of pages through Google Webmaster Tools. But what now?

The next step is to optimize your pages to be presented, when users enters the keywords that are relevant to your site. Furthermore you must develop your pages relevance seen from the search engine perspective, also known as link popularity or Page Rank.
