Finally, we will take you behind the principles of gaining popularity by Google, i.e. increasing your page rank.

The right search terms - The way to success with SEO

When users navigate to your pages they go through the keywords typed in e.g. the Google search box. The result page shows the pages which are optimized with respect to exactly the keywords that the user selected.

The first step is therfore that you do a brain storm of what keywords you may imagine a user would use if looking for content similar to what you offer. Consider the different variants and spellings and think in phrases or combinations of words.

You may want to use Google's keyword tool to get ideas for additional keywords.

Google Keyword Tool

The tool gives a good indication of how many searches there are on each keyword or combination. That way you avoid to optimize your pages for keywords that do not generate traffic. You will also get a feel for how tough the competition is for those keywords.

You can now begin to prioritize the keywords, so you are left with no more than 4 keywords per page that you will give first priority and in addition 5-10 which may be added a smaller part of the page structure.

You have to make sure, that your page content is optimized with respect to those keywords and that they correctly integrated in the META Tags of the html code.

Meta Tags

The three Meta Tags <Title>,<Description> og <Keywords> are placed in the <head> section of the HTML code like this:

<head>

<META NAME="title" CONTENT=".....................">

<META NAME="description" CONTENT=".....................">

<META NAME="keywords" CONTENT=".....................">

</head>

Other tags are placed in the <body> as a part of the page content. Read more about the use of the individual tags in the following.

Optimizing your page

When you build your pages there are a number of tags which are particular important:

  • <Title>

  • META Description

  • META Keywords

  • H1-H6

  • Alt

  • Href

  • Link Title

<Title> Tag

This tag is one of the most important when a page is optimized for keywords. Most search engines, including Google place great importance on the page title. The title is also the line being displayed in the top section in the search page. This tag can contain up to 75 characters.

Slightly simplified, it can be said that at the most common searches, a page will usually not have a chance to appear in the first search results pages, if the Title tag does not contain the performed search words.

A lot of sites choose only to have the company name in the Title tag. The result is ceteris paribus that the pages will not have a chance to be presented in the search results unless the user searches directly for the company name.

For the same reasons, the title tag of each page must vary, each page can be regarded as a separate theme that can be targeted a group of specific keywords. In this way, a site with different pages can spread over a wide variety of keywords. However, the Title tag of each page should also contain the single keyword that are most central to the site.

An example of varied Title Tags from a recipe site could be:

Thai recipes. Main course with chicken

Thai recipes. Appetizer with shrimps

Low fat recipes. Ice cream with berries

Low fat recipes. Find the calories

In the four examples there is one main keyword, Recipes, which is included in all titles. Then the pages are optimized for the subcategories Thai and Low Fat and those pages are then optimized for there actual content. Depending on your taste for advertising effects the titles can steamed up with superlatives such as Healthy, Delicious, Easy, Cheap, and so on.

It is important to remember, that the Title has two different purposes. The first is to be filtered by the search machines so that you are showing up in the results. The second is to appeal to the visitors of flesh and blood so they are reading your text.

META Tag - Description

Similar to the Title Tag, the Description Tag provides relevance to the search terms and are functioning like an ad for the pages, encouraging the user to visit the site.

In the example below we have made a search for "funny movies". A search that returned over 37 million websites. As seen by the two highest-ranking sites, each keyword is fully present in the title and completely or partially in the description.

META Tag - Keywords

The content of Meta Tag Keywords are not displayed to users, but are to a certain extent used by the search engines to define relevance. The significance is less than before and to the extent that the tag is used it should contain the same keywords as the Title and Description tags, and furthermore also relevant keywords from the current page text which is not included in Title and Description. One can also consider the Keyword tag as a placeholder for all the keywords that appear in the page text. Then from this placeholder you position the most important in the Title tag and the second most important addition in the Description tag.

Relation between tags and page content

Relevance is crucial for Google. It makes no sense to over fill your Title, Description and Keyword Tags with keywords if they do not also appear in the text and content on the actual page. That would mean that users were tricked into your site using some specific keywords, and then finding something else on the page. In addition to the user quickly pressing the back button, and thus has no value, then this lack of relevance will be penalized by Google.

The first task is to think of relevant content for the users who enters through the keywords you present in your tags. That means write articles that meets user expectations.

The next task is to convince the search engines and especially Google that this relevance is present. Remember that it is programmed robots who visits your site. They do not understand the content, but only detects relationships between keywords, structure and links.

You must prioritize your keywords so that 2 to 4 main keywords appears as many times as possible on the page. All other keywords must be included on the page according to their relevance. If you're not able to incorporate a specific keyword in a natural way, then delete it from your tags. It is important that there is consistency between the tags and content.

It is also important that you not fill your text with specific keywords in an unnatural manner. If keyword density is too high it will be punished. The best indicator of whether you step over the line or not is that text must be readable, natural and appealing.

H1-H6 Tags

The <h1> - <h6> tag is used for the formatting of fonts. You should consistently use these tags for headlines that contains keywords, as the search robots are looking for them and are assigning the content in the H-Tags keyword value. It is important that the H1 tag only is used once and placed at the top of the page and that this tag replicates the most important keywords from your Title-Tag.:

<h1> YOUR TWO OR THREE MOST IMPORTANT KEYWORDS</H1>

Alt Tag

The Alt-Tag is used to display a text instead of a picture, if the picture for some reason can not be loaded. Search engines can not read images, and therefore uses the Alt-Tags to understand what the picture is about. Search engines expect that it describes what the picture shows, but you might as well use it to place a text containing keywords.

Href

Use keywords in the text of your links. Instead of:

Title in links

A link <a href> has an attribut: title="text". It is somewhat the same as the ALT-tag, and can be used to further describe, what the link points at. Remember also here to place the relevant keywords.

Forget about the easy short cuts

A lot of SPAM mails, and websites, will offer you to be registered for free in more than a thousand search engines and directories. This is nothing but scam and will only get you banned. Stay away from those offers.
